Recently converted to flare jeans by the figure-flattering magic of the MiH Jeans Marrakesh Flares, I find myself ready to branch out into bold new denim territory: the colored bell-bottom. I turned to Shopbop stylist Loni for some guidance to keep me looking on-trend, not over the top.

Rebecca: Colored flares are a big statement. How do we keep the look refined, and not garish?
Loni: I reach for a favorite blazer layered over a crisp tee, crew-neck sweater, or ladylike blouse. With modest accessories and a structured bag, the flares take center stage and the look remains focused. Colored flares create such a fun canvas for the tidy, vintage-inspired looks of the season.

R: Tell us about colorblocking. Are bright flares too much for a multi-hued look?
L: Here the conversation just turns to what colors we’re talking about blocking! One idea I love is something like salmon Rag & Bone/Jean bell-bottoms with a purple Elizabeth and James blouse. I love the thought of colors that are just a notch above pastel.

R: How would you style a casual look with a bright flare? How would you do a more polished look?
L: I love the idea of doing a bright flare with a surf vibe. An easy, loose T by Alexander Wang tank layered with a bright bralette or bikini top could be fun. Throw on some boho Serafina earrings, Havaianas flip-flops or a fun clog, and you’re set. For something more polished, I would choose tailored pieces. A sleeveless Equipment blouse worn untucked would be lovely. For accessories, I’d reach for a pointy-toed Giuseppe Zanotti pump and an oversized clutch. Try hair in a sleek, almost wet-looking pony.

R: What’s your favorite pair and color?
L: The Adam Bell-Bottom Jeans in lava. I’ve worn them more than I thought I would wear red pants. The red is so true, with just a pinch of orange.
